In the middle of a massive decline in sales and rumors about the sale of his consumer phone business, it looks like Huawei has decided to move forward with the launch of its second-generation super premium foldable phone later this month

In an official posts on Weibo, Huawei teased the arrival of Mate X2 on February 22nd. This is long-expected follow-upto the original Mate X from behind 2019 and something more polished Mate Xs from 2020. The big change, which is not entirely clear from the teaser image, is that the Mate X2 rumour has it to present a flexible foldable display inwards—similar to Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold2Instead of the outer folding panel, Huawei used it on its previous foldable phones.

When Samsung and Huawei launched their first foldable phones, contrasting versions of the Galaxy Fold and Mate X sparked much debate about which design would ultimately win, with a number of pros and cons for each.

On phones like the Galaxy Fold, the use of an interior folding design seems to offer slightly longer durability, because when closed, the phone’s delicate flexible screen is protected from scratches by glass or stronger metal faces (although as we’ve seen, there are other ways for a foldable phone to deteriorate). The main disadvantage of an internal folding screen is the thickness, because when the phone is closed, you lose access to flexible screen, which then requires phone manufacturers to add a secondary external display, thus increasing the size of the phone.

For outwardly foldable phones, the wider the elbow radius means that a crease is less likely to grow in the middle of a flexible display. Bas Mate X’s flexible screen wraps around around almost the entire device when it was turned off, Huawei managed to avoid including a secondary display and use a single camera module to capture more traditional selfies and photos. This meant that the Mate X was significantly thinner than the Galaxy Fold, while offering less redundant components. However, even if Huawei succeeded cases for Mate X, sheThe flexible screen was often left unprotected, which was understandable a source of concern for many buyers.

rumored specifications for the Mate X2 include an 8-inch foldable main screen and a 6.45-inch secondary screen, so pare Huawei maybe they evaluated Samsung and projects decided to test an interior folding screen as well.

Mate X2 may also include built-in stylus support (something the Galaxy Z Fold2 doesn’t have) and a new laptop mode that lets you turn the phone sideways and use it as a very small personal computer. Evidence of laptop mode was discovered after some unofficial renditions of the Mate X2 phone appeared onlineand while it would certainly require specialized software or modifications to make it work, the Mate X2 laptop mode could be an important step forward in the evolution of foldable phones.

THErumored specifications include a selection of high-end components, including support for 5G, a quad camera module with up to 10x zoom, storage up to 512 GB and 66W extremely fast fast loading.

Huawei plans to officially unveil the Mate X2 on February 22, but taking this into account previous Huawei foldable phones have were only available in China and Huawei is is still prohibited from including support for Google Mobile services, it is unlikely Mate X2 will be on sale here in S.tates.
