US Senator Gary Peters Launches Report on Postal Service Changes, Mail Delays

Senator Gary Peters released a report this week on changes to the United States Postal Service (USPS), addressing mail delays.

This is the sixth report since Peters launched an investigation in August. He looks through the holidays and the new year.

Peters, a senior member of the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, is putting pressure on the USPS and postmaster Louis DeJoy to answer whether the changes made over the summer will be returned in the new year. These changes sent timely deliveries down. In Detroit, less than two-thirds of deliveries went to their destinations, as promised.

The report also outlines the new changes for 2021, stating that the USPS management “considers a comprehensive review of the postal service’s operations and potentially profound reductions in the services it provides.” This includes the permanent lowering of service standards, rising package tariffs and “aggressive reductions in working hours”.

The report comes at a time when the postal service has been hit by an almost record delay in holiday packages during the pandemic. According to ShipMatrix data, more than 6 million packages remained in the shipping depots, with days left before Christmas.

A USPS spokesman declined an interview, but said in an interview that “We are using the available resources to match the workload created by the impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. We appreciate the patience of our customers and the efforts of our employees, as conditions change every day. “

The changes presented in Peters’ report are not yet final. USPS leaders have said they intend to detail their plans for 2021 in the coming weeks.
