In the last 25 years, Mewtwo has become one of the most recognized Pokemon in the franchise. The psychic guy has been forcing fans nowadays Red and Green Pokemon, but it’s hard to tell if Mewtwo would have been as durable if it had been based on one of the other types of Pokemon. Earlier this month, Instagram artist Harry George created various type variations for Squirtle, and now the artist has done the same for Mewtwo! It’s really interesting to see the 18 different ways in which Mewtwo could be interpreted and it’s clear that a lot of thoughts went into the process!
Harry George’s Instagram post can be found embedded below.
It is clear that George worked hard to capture the essence of Mewtwo, while channeling details that bring to mind each specific Pokemon type. None of the types are listed in the post, but a quick look at each form should help most Pokemon fans decipher which one is intended! There are a lot of little details that should help viewers differentiate between which is Dragon type and which is Flying or which is meant to evoke Steel and which is Electric.
In the Pokemon series, there is really only one Mewtwo; the creature was created as a result of experiments with Mew’s genetic data on Cinnabar Island. As such, it seems unlikely that Mewtwo will win regional variants anytime soon, as it would not fit into the narrative of the series at all. Of course, it is always possible for Team Rocket or another group to try to replicate these experiments, this time with another Pokemon type. Given Mewtwo’s popularity, it wouldn’t be a total surprise to see the creature obtain a regional variant in this way, and it might end up looking like one of George’s! For now, though, fans will only have to settle for the 1996 version.
In addition to his performances of Mewtwo and Squirtle, George has created several other pieces for Pokemon fans. More of the artist’s work can be found on their Instagram page, which can be found right here.
