Hundreds of thousands are without electricity for the fourth day in a row in Texas, and nearly 12 million people are experiencing water outages, with cities such as Austin issuing hot water notifications to residents.
Austin Mayor Steve Adler told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota that the situation is “quite serious” in his hometown right now.
“We need to make sure that people don’t use a drop of water that they shouldn’t use, so that we can build up our reserves and pressure so that we can eliminate this warning,” Adler said. “It’s another very difficult thing to put on top of the community. But the message right now is to focus on the next two, three days. Keep people safe, conserve energy and water, and then we have a lot of questions. ”
Adler said the state needs to better regulate its food system.
“We also need an explanation and an understanding of how … we won’t be back here,” Adler said.
KP George, a judge in Fort Bend County outside Houston, said he was sleeping in his office, but that his heat had been restored last night.
“A lot of people live in their cars and we see a few deaths from carbon monoxide here … and it’s a mess. It’s a mess, “said George.
“We are on our own network; we are on a regional network. And I think we’re paying a price for that now, “he added.
