California Tesla Inc. (TSLA.O) vehicle registrations fell marginally in the first quarter compared to last year, affected by a decline in Model 3 registrations, according to data from Cross-Sell, a research firm that collects title and registration data .

California records for the Tesla Model 3 sedan on the mass market fell 54 percent annually to 8,060, while the Tesla Model Y compact crossover utility vehicle gained 12,227 in the first quarter, Cross-Sell data showed on Tuesday.

Tesla said earlier that it is receiving a strong reception of the Y model in China and is making rapid progress towards full production capacity in the country.

The report also showed California registrations, which are moments for the electric car maker and the largest U.S. market, fell from about 22,117 vehicles in the fourth quarter to about 21,520 vehicles in the first quarter.

The total number of registrations in the first quarter of the 22 states in which data were collected was 44,502, with model Y representing more than half of the registrations.

Registration numbers may not accurately reflect the number of vehicle deliveries during the quarter, as registrations in the United States typically take approximately 30 days from the time of sale.

Tesla, whose shares rose more than 700% in 2020, is expected to report first-quarter results after closing on April 26.
