Russia welcomes the US waiving sanctions on Iran; Israel warns of danger

Moscow.

Russia welcomed today US decision to cancel the reinstatement of UN sanctions on Iran initiated by former US President Donald Trump, but stressed the need to resume the nuclear deal with Tehran.

“Giving up requests for sanctions is in itself a good thing,” the Kremlin spokesman said. Dmitri Peskov, at the daily telephone press conference.

He emphasized that “such sanctioning pressure obviously did not help to implement the Comprehensive Joint Action Plan (JCPOA), especially when it made the situation very complex, with no way out”.

“In this sense (the new American position) is a sign event positive. But the important thing is to restore the JCPOA regime, “Peskov added.

He recalled that Russia has always regretted Washington’s decision in 2018 to renounce the nuclear deal with Iran signed in 2015 by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom). European Union and Germany.

“As before, we are supporters of this document and we call on everyone to do everything possible to comply effectively with it,” said the spokesman for the Russian presidency.

On Thursday, according to the American press, the US permanent mission to the UN informed her Security Council that the communications of the previous government of the United States of America, in which it requested the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran for violating the JCPOA, were annulled.

Israel insists there is danger

Israel has again spoken out today against the possibility of the United States returning to the nuclear deal with Iran, following yesterday’s White House offer to resume negotiations with Tehran.

“Israel remains committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and its position on the nuclear deal has not changed,” a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said today.

He added that “a return to the old agreement will pave the way for Iran to a nuclear arsenal” and explained that the Israeli authorities are in contact with US on this issue.

Israel has always been a staunch opponent of the agreement and in 2018 celebrated the withdrawal of the pact from Washington and the re-imposition by the Donald Trump government of all economic sanctions on Tehran.
