One dead, five wounded stabbed at the Vancouver library, suspected in custody

NORTH VANCOUVER, Canada (Reuters) – A woman was killed and five others were injured in a stabbing at a public library near a crowded shopping area in a Vancouver suburb on Saturday, and police said they had the only suspect in custody.

The attack took place in the early afternoon, and investigators called witnesses, especially those who filmed videos later posted on social networks.

“We have six victims who suffered stab wounds. We have a victim who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. This victim is a woman, “said the police sergeant. Frank Jang told a news conference broadcast by Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

“We think we have the only suspect in custody … Obviously, the question is why this happened,” Jang told reporters in front of the library where the attack took place.

No other details about the victims were provided.

Video from the scene appeared to show a man injuring himself with a knife before being taken into police custody.

Although there was no report on his condition, Jang said the suspect had a criminal record.

“My heart is in North Vancouver tonight,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter. “Know that all Canadians care about us and want a speedy recovery from the wounded.”
