Oakland Airport sells first COVID-19 test from vending machines

Passengers passing through Oakland International Airport will now be able to take a COVID-19 test from a vending machine, officials said.

Self-administered kits are available for about $ 150 at contactless kiosks at each terminal, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Oakland is the first airport in the United States to sell coronavirus tests on vending machines, officials said.

“We have realized that travelers are going through a difficult time right now, especially since we are all navigating this COVID pandemic,” said airport spokesman Roberto Bernardo. “We wanted to offer travelers another testing option.”

Bernardo said the sets are intended for travelers returning to Oakland, rather than those flying to a destination that requires a negative arrival test.

The kits require passengers to collect a sample of saliva and then mail it for testing, the outlet reported. The results are expected on an app on their phone within 48 hours of receiving the shipment.
