Mourning in Mexican music; Sax and Arturo Castro die

MEXICO CITY.

Eulalio Cervantes, saxophonist of the Mexican rock band La Maldita Vecindad, and the children of Quinta Patio, died at the age of 52, after being hospitalized for complications from covid-19, his wife, Jessica Franco, reported on the networks socialization.

With deep pain and sadness, I participate in the sensitive death of my beloved husband Eulalio Cervantes Galarza “, she wrote on Twitter, a comment that went viral yesterday afternoon.

Cervantes, better known as Sax, suffered kidney problems last year, for which he had already been hospitalized, and later continued his rehabilitation at home.

However, on March 6, he was again admitted to a hospital in Mexico State due to complications from covid-19.

Sax was one of the founders of La Maldita Vecindad three decades ago and worked hard to make the band a landmark in the Latin American rock scene.

He stood out with songs like Pachuco and his innovative mixes of rock, ska, reggae, punk and even bolero and danzón.

Sax, born on October 30, 1968 in San Luis Potosi, was noted for his style of playing the saxophone, a sound that was one of the characteristics of La Maldita Vecindad

The musician began his career at the age of 11 and, from that moment, he showed his ability as a saxophonist and clarinetist in high school, when he was part of the Youth Orchestra.

With La Maldita Vecindad, together with Roco, Aldo, Pato, Pacho, Tiki and Lobito, he managed to make songs like Kumbala, Pachuco, Don Palabras, Pata de Perro and Cenizas, among others, public favorites.

La Maldita Vecindad could not be recognized without Sax’s style, which was fired by his fellow musicians through social networks. On the group’s Twitter, they said goodbye to Sax, as well as other artists such as Café Tacvba, Lila Downs, Javier Bátiz and Iñaki, from Phobia, who, in addition to showing their sadness, highlighted the influence and legacy that the artist leaves in the sound of Latin American rock.

Founder of the Castro brothers, the musician died at the age of 82, due to a cancerous tumor that affected him

Musician and composer Arturo Castro, who was one of the founders of the group Los Hermanos Castro, died at the age of 82, as a result of a long-standing cancerous tumor.

This was confirmed by the National Association of Interpreters (ANDI) through its social networks.

The Castro brothers maintained their peak for three decades: the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Arturo maintained a romantic relationship for many years with Olga Breeskin, a love story that was very popular in the art world.

Last year he married Rosa Yolanda, who has been his girlfriend for the last 40 years.

Born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, at a very young age he showed his love and taste for music. When he was 10, he decided to form a trio: Los Panchitos, with his brothers Jorge and Javier. He chose this name because of his admiration for Los Panchos and because they had the ability to play the guitar, just like the adult group.

Thus, they managed to appear in some places and reached the cinema with small participations with Manolo Fábregas and Marga López.

Already in the 70’s, the Castro brothers, their cousin Gualberto, joined. At this moment, they positioned themselves in the musical environment of our country and managed to cross the borders to sing in Los Angeles. They got a three-year contract at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas.

The group’s success led them to have the opportunity to sing in Spain and later on television shows in the United States, such as The Ed Suillivan Show and the program Judy Garland.

With acceptance in Las Vegas and various cities in the United States, Los Hermanos Castro shared the stage with artists such as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr., Harry Belafonte, Cher and Neil Sedaka, among many others.

Sinatra expressed her admiration for the Castro brothers.
