In a large report published by The Athletic, a woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, accused Callaway – who was the manager of the New York Mets for two seasons – of “pushing her feet close to her face” in time what the reporter was doing in an interview with Callaway.
Another reporter claims that Callaway said he would share information about his former Mets team if the journalist gets drunk on him.
Two of the women interviewed said they had been warned about Callaway’s repeated inappropriate behavior, according to The Athletic. A reporter told the publication that Callaway’s naughty behavior “was the worst kept secret in sports.”
CNN has made repeated attempts to contact Callaway for comment, including investigations by Angels.
Athletic reports that Callaway gave the following statement when the allegations were made:
“Instead of rushing to respond to these general statements that I have just been made aware of, I look forward to an opportunity to provide more specific answers. Any relationship I was engaged in was consensual and my behavior was in no way intended to be disrespectful to any woman involved. I am married, and my wife has been informed of these general allegations. “
Major League Baseball (MLB) told CNN that it is launching an investigation into Callaway.
On Tuesday, MLB released a statement saying it “was never notified by Mickey Callaway of any allegations of sexual misconduct.”
The angels say they will work with the league’s office to investigate the allegations.
“The reported behavior violates the values and policies of the Angels,” the team said.
Callaway was the Mets manager in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Sandy Alderson, who served as the team’s president last year and served as its general manager from 2010-2018, said in a statement that “it was dismayed by the reported actions ”.
“I was not aware of the behavior described in the story at the time of Mickey’s employment or at any time during my term as general manager. We have already begun a review of our hiring processes to ensure that the verification of new employees is more thorough and comprehensive. “Alderson said in a statement.
In a statement Monday, new Mets owner Steve Cohen said: “The conduct reported today in The Athletic’s story is completely unacceptable and will never be tolerated under my ownership.”
The Cleveland Indians, who hired Callaway as a pitching coach for five seasons from 2013-2017, said in a statement that they were informed of the allegations against Callaway for the first time on Monday.
“We are currently examining the matter internally and in consultation with Major League Baseball to determine the next appropriate steps,” the team statement said. “Our organization does not unequivocally accept this type of behavior. We seek to create an inclusive work environment in which everyone, regardless of gender, feels safe and comfortable to do their job.”
CNN’s Amir Vera contributed to the report.
