The eighth entry in the Mario Kart series has finally surpassed sales Mario Kart Wii in the US to be crowned the best-selling racing game in this country.
This information comes from Mat Piscatella of the NPD Group. According to IGN, this includes “combined” sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the original Mario Kart 8 play on Wii U.
Mat also notes how the latest entry in the Mario Kart series was in the top of last month’s bestsellers:
“US NPD SW – Mario Kart 8 ranked 6th in the bestsellers of March 2021. Mario Kart 8 is the best-selling racing video game in US history.”
Nintendo sales data (as of December 31, 2020) reveals that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has moved 33.41 million units worldwide and is the best-selling Switch game. The original Wii U, as of September 20, 2020, has sold 8.45 million copies.
These combined sales (41.86 million) obviously exceed lifetime Mario Kart Wii sales, but individually, the Wii game is still technical ahead globally – with 37.38 million units sold.
