Hunter Biden on Sunday tried to explain why he was dating his late brother’s widow – but said he could understand why “ people were confused ” by the eyebrow-inducing romance.
The president’s son discussed the response to revelations that he was dating his brother Beau Biden’s widow, Hallie Biden, in March 2017.
“I think it confused people and I understand that. Really, ”he said during a sitdown with CBS’s” Sunday Morning. “
“For me it’s not something that’s hard to explain because it came from a really overwhelming grief that we both shared and we were together trying to do the right thing. And that grief turned into a hope for a love that might replace what we had lost and it didn’t work, ”he continued.
Hunter – who at the time was still married to his estranged wife Kathleen – said he and Hallie were “incredibly lucky” that their family supported the unusual partnership after Beau died of cancer in May 2015.
But others were not so understanding. Hunter revealed that he had lost customers and business during that time.
“I’ve made a lot of decisions that I probably shouldn’t have made,” says Hunter, who has long struggled with addiction and also revealed that he’d searched through carpets for something resembling crack cocaine.
“There was a lot more compassion and understanding for the people who knew me, but it was an awful time.”
Hunter and Hallie split up later that same year.
He has since remarried to a South African woman named Melissa Cohen just a week after they met.
Hunter appeared on the morning news program on Sunday to promote his new memoir, “ Beautiful Things, ” which came out April 6.
