A Honduran man who, according to immigration authorities, has been deported twice from the United States, will go to jail for raping and killing a Peruvian who was jogging in a park in New Jersey.
A judge on Thursday sentenced Jorge Ríos, 35, of Jersey City to 30 years in prison for the 2019 attack on Carolina Cano, 45, in Liberty Park. The judge also imposed a 10-year sentence to be executed simultaneously for aggravated sexual assault.
According to Hudson County prosecutors, Rios admitted to sexually assaulting and strangling Cano. She had lived in the United States for about two years and worked as a babysitter.
Police found his body in the lake in the park.
Ríos, originally from Honduras, entered the United States illegally and was deported in 2003 and 2004, Immigration and Customs (ICE) officials said.
