Former US Vice President Walter Mondale, a Liberal Democratic Party icon, died Monday at the age of 93, US media reported.
The press, citing a statement from the family, does not specify the causes of death of anyone Democrat Vice President Jimmy Carter between 1977 and 1981.
“Today I am mourning the death of my dear friend Walter Mondale, who I consider the best vice president in the history of our country,” Carter said in a statement expressing condolences to the family of his former number two.
“He was an invaluable partner and a good servant to the people of Minnesota, United States and the world, ”he added.
Prior to his residence in the White House, Mondale served his home state of Minnesota as attorney general from 1960 to 1964 and then as a senator from 1964 to 1976. Mondale then served as ambassador to Japan from 1993 to 1996 during his tenure. By Bill Clinton.
In 2008 endorsed Hillary Clinton’s candidacy to the presidency and later supported Barack Obama when he got the nomination. Former President Obama said Mondale was “in favor of progressive goals and changing the role of the vice president.”
The actual vice-mandataria, Kamala Harris, said in a statement that Mondale “lived an extraordinary life of service” and was “very generous with his wit and wisdom over the years.”
President Joe Biden, who had a long career as a senator, recalled that Mondale was one of the first to welcome him when he first came to the Senate.
Senator Amy Klobuchar, a fellow Minnesota native, mourned Mondale’s passing, calling him “ kind and dignified to the end. ”
“Walter Mondale was a real civil servant and my friend and my mentor,” he said on Twitter.
Born January 5, 1928, the son of a Methodist pastor and music teacher, Walter Frederick “Fritz” Mondale was an outspoken civil rights advocate.
During his tenure in the Senate, he advocated education, housing, the rights of migrant workers and child nutrition. He ran unsuccessfully to the White House in 1984 and defied the republican Ronald Reagan, who won reelection.
Mondale chose Representative Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate because he was the first major party American candidate to include a woman in the presidential binomial title.
In 2014, his wife Joan Adams, with whom he had three children – Ted, William and Eleanor – died after a long illness. The first two were concerned with politics, and Eleanor, who died of head cancer in 2011, was a journalist.
