Epic games to compensate Fortnite and Rocket League Loot Box buyers following a class action lawsuit

Fortnite Rocket League

After reaching a settlement following a class action lawsuit over the random loot houses, Epic Games revealed that it will give money in the game to both affected Fortnite and Rocket League players.

According to details on a case-finding website, the lawsuit alleges that “Epic Games violated state consumer protection laws, prevented minors from exercising their contractual rights of revocation and negligently distorted the value of its articles in the game in relation to Fortnite and Rocket League video games. “(thanks Eurogamer).

Epic denied “any allegation of wrongdoing, liability and damages alleged in the action”, also denying that the action would be “appropriate for class treatment” if the issue were to go through trial. Instead, “in order to avoid time, expense and uncertainty of disputes”, the Court granted preliminary approval of the detailed settlement on the website.

So what does this mean for players? Well, Epic says that any Fortnite: Save the World player who has purchased a Loot Llama booty box at random will automatically receive 1,000 V-Bucks in their account. Similarly, 1,000 credits will be awarded to any player in the Rocket League who has purchased a box with a random item (both items have been removed from those games). Compensation will be added to all globally affected accounts in the next few days.

The settlement site also allows US players to file a claim for additional benefits if they believe their purchase “gives rise to a consumer fraud claim, breach of contract or other claim” or if “they want to obtain a partial refund for a purchase made as a minor. “Epic has allocated $ 26.5 million to address these claims.
