NEW YORK (WABC) – France and Japan report cases of coronavirus strain first reported in UK

French authorities are following the case of a French citizen who arrived from England on 19 December. They say they have no symptoms and are isolated at home.

Japanese media report five cases of more contagious strain. Health officials are trying to keep track of their contacts and determine how they became infected.

Detainees are giving positive results in Hudson County
According to an e-mail from a Hudson County Prison official, at least 17 detainees recently tested positive for COVID-19. Sixteen of the individuals are county inmates and one is a federal inmate.

Each is housed in isolation, as are the other detainees with whom they have come into contact. Five employees working in prison, including nurses and correctional officers, died of COVID.

Healthcare workers are starting to receive the Moderna vaccine in Essex County
New Jersey is taking another step forward in the fight against coronavirus, as the state has seen more than 5,000 new cases overnight.

On Saturday, health workers will begin receiving the Moderna vaccine at Essex Community College, which is one of five locations in the county where the vaccine is available.

The Duke women’s basketball team ended its season on Friday amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The team is on hiatus since December 16 due to two positive COVID-19 tests and tracking contacts in the travel schedule. The Blue Devils postponed games against Miami, NC State and UNC Wilmington.

The team’s next scheduled game was against Louisville on Thursday. The men’s basketball team planned to continue playing.

The virus storms Belarusian prisons full of criticism of the president
A wave of COVID-19 has engulfed Belarusian prisons that are full of people in custody for protesting against the nation’s authoritarian president and some of the protesters who contracted the coronavirus while in prison accuse authorities of neglecting or even encouraging infections. .

Activists who spoke to the Associated Press after the release described massive overcrowded cells without adequate ventilation or basic facilities and a lack of medical treatment.

Gloomy prediction
A new model from the University of Washington estimates that the number of deaths in the US will reach over half a million by April 1.

But researchers say that number would have been higher. The vaccine could help save more than 33,000 lives.
