There was not a Comic-Con in person in 2020, and there will be none in 2021, after the show’s organizers announced a decision to “postpone” until 2022.
This is … a strange use of the word, because Comic-Con in 2022 would simply be Comic-Con in 2022, but maybe there is a legal struggle involved in the exact language used in terms of insurance and so on.
Here are the most important parts of the organizer’s statement:
The organization’s policy is to continue to closely monitor information from local and national health officials regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. We could never have imagined what the world experienced in 2020 and continues to experience today. While we are stimulated by the launch of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals who are inoculated, it seems that July will be too early to keep a personal Comic-Con event safe. For this reason, we have made the difficult decision to postpone Comic-Con 2021 as a personal meeting until our 2022 date.
Instead of an in-person event, a Comic-Con @ Home event will take place at the same time. And in the more promising news, while main Comic-Con was pushed in 2022, there is a possibility that a smaller show will take place between them as a kind of test:
… we believe that launching a smaller personal event later can be a safe alternative. For this reason, we are pleased to announce that the San Diego Comics Convention intends to present a three-day personal convention in San Diego in November.
