California will overtake New York in coronavirus deaths

The growing number of coronavirus deaths is likely to surpass New York, as the pandemic continues to devastate the country’s most populous state, reports The Guardian.

California reported 44,494 Covid deaths Tuesday, just a few hundred less than New York, which reported 44,969 that day. State coronavirus deaths have risen sharply in recent months, from about 20,000 in December to about 30,000 in January. It took six months for the state to record the first 10,000 coronavirus deaths, but now Golden State has an average of about 450 coronavirus deaths a day.

Governor Gavin Newsom posted on Twitter Tuesday: “A month ago, we reported 53,000 cases. Today: 8,251 cases. – A month ago, I reported a positive test rate of 14%. Today: 4.8%. – Hospitalizations: decreasing by 34% in the last 2 weeks. – ICU admissions: down 26% in the last 2 weeks. The signs of hope continue. ”

He announced on Wednesday that two cases of the South African variant of the coronavirus have been confirmed in the Bay area, in Alameda and Santa Clara counties.

“The issue of mutations is the most important, not only here in the state of California and in this nation, but more and more globally,” Newsom told a news conference, according to 10 News in San Diego.
