This week, Apple expanded its 13-inch MacBook Pro rear lighting service program to allow eligible notebooks to be covered for up to five years from the date of initial purchase or up to three years from the start date of the program. any of which is longer. The previous limit was four years after the initial date of purchase.
Apple launched the program on May 21, 2019 after establishing that a “very small percentage” of 13-inch MacBook Pro units sold between October 2016 and February 2018 may have vertical light areas along the bottom of the display or a backlight that it no longer works completely. Eligible models include the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two-port Thunderbolt 3) and MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four-port Thunderbolt 3).
To identify which Mac model you have, click the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen, and then select “About this Mac” from the menu. Apple has not extended the program to any other MacBook model at this time.
Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will replace the screen on your affected 13-inch MacBook Pro for free. To begin the repair process, visit the Get Help page on the Apple website. If you think your MacBook Pro has been affected by this issue and you have paid to repair the display, you can contact Apple for a refund.
In 2019, repair site iFixit reported that the backlight issues are caused by a delicate flexible cable that can wear and tear after repeatedly opening and closing the display on affected 13-inch MacBook Pro models. Apple has extended the length of the flexible cable by 2 mm in the 2018 models, which seems to solve the problem.
