A Puerto Rican is the new police chief in Dallas, Texas

Washington DC – Eddie García, born in Puerto Rico, was appointed Chief of Police of Dallas, Texas days after resigning from the same position in San José, California.

Garcia retired from the San Jose Police Department, where he worked for nearly 29 years, on December 12 to accept the job in Dallas. For four years he was the police chief of that city of San Jose – the tenth largest in the United States

He becomes the first Latino police chief in Dallas, which is the ninth most populous city in the United States with a population of 1.3 million.

“We have to celebrate that Garcia will be the first Hispanic to become a police chief. It is truly a historic moment in Dallas. “ said the town’s mayor, Eric Johnson.

According to Dallas Morning News, Garcia, who is bilingual, was born in Puerto Rico. His family moved to California when he was five.

Michael Mata, of the Dallas Police Association, told the local CBS channel that it’s important for Garcia to have experience dealing with police matters in cities with a demographic and population profile similar to that of Dallas.

Garcia, who described herself as a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys soccer team, was selected from six other candidates for the Dallas Police Department.

Dallas’ new police chief will begin his duties on February 3.
