The woman dies after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine from Cal Poly Pomona; no connection to the shooting was suspected

POMONA, Calif. (KABC) – A 78-year-old woman died after receiving the Pfizer vaccine at Cal Poly Pomona, but her death is not believed to be linked to the shooting, officials said.

The woman was shot Friday afternoon and was seen as she began complaining of discomfort and loss of consciousness, according to a statement from Dr. Michael E. Morris, director of the COVID-19 vaccination program in California. South of Kaiser Permanente, which leads the site.

Paramedics on stage helped the woman “but in the end she could not be revived.”

“Her cause of death has not been established; however, there were no signs or symptoms of a severe allergic or anaphylactic reaction,” Morris said in a statement.

The woman’s family says she had a history of heart disease. Her 57-year-old husband also received the vaccination and is still urging people to get the vaccine, adding that she plans to receive the second dose in a few weeks.

Kaiser says the site will remain open and vaccinations will continue as long as supplies are available.

“On behalf of all those involved in the vaccine site, run by Kaiser Permanente, we offer our sincere and sincere condolences to his family,” Morris said.
