Cañas was also part of the negotiating committee that signed the peace agreements in the country.

During his professional life he distinguished himself as an economist, analyst and teacher, he lost his life due to an illness he had suffered for years.

FMLN member Gerson Martínez also regretted Cañas’ departure.

Cañas was born in San Salvador on November 21, 1950, and began his political career at the age of 19 at the University of El Salvador, after entering the Faculty of Economics in 1968.

He was Secretary General of the University of El Salvador from 1993-1994.

For the 2015 municipal and legislative elections, Roberto Cañas ran as a candidate for mayor of San Salvador for the Democratic Change (CD) party.

His remains will be covered at Las Flores Funeral Home, between 21 Calle Poniente and 27 Avenida Norte, San Salvador.
