This Sunday afternoon, FMLN party sources confirmed the death of Roberto Cañas, one of the signatories of the peace agreements.
Cañas was also part of the negotiating committee that signed the peace agreements in the country.
During his professional life he distinguished himself as an economist, analyst and teacher, he lost his life due to an illness he had suffered for years.
“I am very sorry for the death of Roberto Cañas, our Rubén Rojas, a remarkable professional and teacher; founder of our RN, part of the command structures during the conflict in Chalate and the San Salvador volcano. Signatory of peace agreements. My condolences to his family “, published the FMLN party member, Eugenio Chicas, on his Twitter account.

FMLN member Gerson Martínez also regretted Cañas’ departure.
“My condolences to the family, colleagues and friends who are suffering for Licdo’s irreparable departure. Roberto Cañas, a signatory to the peace agreements, economist and intellectual who during the civil war against the dictatorship, campaigned under the name of Rubén Rojas ”.
Cañas was born in San Salvador on November 21, 1950, and began his political career at the age of 19 at the University of El Salvador, after entering the Faculty of Economics in 1968.
He was Secretary General of the University of El Salvador from 1993-1994.
For the 2015 municipal and legislative elections, Roberto Cañas ran as a candidate for mayor of San Salvador for the Democratic Change (CD) party.
His remains will be covered at Las Flores Funeral Home, between 21 Calle Poniente and 27 Avenida Norte, San Salvador.
