But come on. Something good must happen in 2021, right?
Many things that were canceled in 2020 have returned this year. Tentatively. And a lot of ordinary activities that we previously considered as such can slowly return to our lives, such as hugging and the anxiety of boarding a plane. Tentative.
If all goes well, we can dare to look forward to these remarkable places in 2021.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been postponed due to the pandemic, but are now scheduled for July 2021. It may not look like the past Olympics – the IOC says it will be a “simpler and narrower approach” – but that a It doesn’t stop us from indulging in community joy by pretending to know how gymnastics is marked.
2. Eurovision Song Contest
Do you remember concerts? Do you remember musical performances? Do you remember seeing large, wavy crowds of overly energetic people enjoying careless vibrations in the world? They may return, and that includes the popular Eurovision Song Contest, which has been postponed since 2020. Contest organizers say “there will definitely be a Eurovision Song Contest in 2021.” It is currently written in May in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
3. NASA’s Perseverance Rover lands on Mars
Mars will get a new small inhabitant when NASA’s Perseverance rover lands in February. Like its charming rover predecessors in the Mars Exploration Program, Perseverance will no doubt have an entire Earth-bound fandom that will root it out. Is it because we like to anthropomorphize complex robotics or because we secretly wish that we too could be thrown to this Earth on another planet?
4. Traveling and large meetings
Raise your hand if the most exotic view you’ve seen this year is literally something outside your home. Even if you don’t plan a huge escape once the pandemic improves, just the idea you might have is somewhat comforting. And do you know what is better than a vacation? A nice (safe) meeting with friends. We hope we all remember how to socialize.
5. Large-scale immunity Covid-19
Of course, for any of these interesting things to happen, we need safe pandemic practices and a Covid-19 vaccine that is available to everyone. Several countries are starting to launch vaccination plans and it seems that there are more vaccination authorizations on the way. It will take some time – experts say we may not see a “normal” appearance until the back half of the year. But, oh, it’s worth the wait.
6. UEFA Euro Championship
The four-year football tournament should have taken place in 2020 and should have been a special one marking the 60th anniversary of the competition. But don’t worry, it will still be special when it starts this summer! Instead of a host region, the games will take place in 12 host countries in Europe, from Spain to Romania and Russia.
7. T20 Cricket World Cup
In other sports news, the T20 Men’s World Cup of the International Cricket Council will return – postponed from 2020, of course – to India in the fall. Americans, if you need a primer before dipping your toes into the waters of the cricket fandom, say nothing more.
8. The 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World
Speaking of landmarks, October 1 will mark 50 years since Walt Disney World. The park will also reveal a lot of new things to do, including a “Ratatoiulle” attraction, a “Guardians of the Galaxy” ride and a “Throne” ride.
9. New climate policies and actions
2020 should have been the year when the world’s climate plans got on the right track. But … they didn’t. Next year can be better! The EU has put a seal on plans to reduce carbon emissions and pour billions into clean energy alternatives. China, the world’s largest polluter, is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2060. Japan, South Korea and Canada have made similar promises to reduce fossil fuels. And we may see more silver lining at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, in November.
10. Presidential inauguration
Regardless of your policy, a presidential inauguration is a piece of history. So all eyes will be on the US in January, when Joe Biden takes over the presidency. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris will make all kinds of history when she takes over as the first woman and the first woman of color to serve as vice president.
11. New TV shows
If you have Netflix on Netflix, never be afraid! It will be a very fruitful TV year. The long-awaited “Friends” meeting will be broadcast in March. A “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reboot is coming to Peacock, Netflix is developing a live-action version of the classic anime “Cowboy Bebop”. AND Disney + is giving up what feels like a million new shows and concepts. Whatever happens to your social agenda, your TV viewing agenda is definitely packed.
12. New movies
Where to start? Take a deep breath: “Dune” with Timothee Chalamet! “” Cinderella “with Billy Porter! A new” Coming to America “with Eddie Murphy! A new Bond movie,” No Time to Die! “A new” Fantastic animals! “Black Widow!” Oh, and Warner Brothers will be releasing their new movies on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters.
13. Tom Cruise goes to the spa
In addition to playing in the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick”,
Tom Cruise will explode – literally – when working on the first narrative film that was filmed in outer space. With the help of NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Cruise will travel to the International Space Station to work on the project this year.
14. The largest cicada chick
I hope you like the bugs, because billions of them will swarm parts of the US when Brood X, the largest and widest of the 15 cicadas in the US, comes out of the ground in the spring. This is an event once every 17 years, folks! It is a cultural moment! It will take months to get the crunch crunch crunch sound out of abandoned shells. But hey, you might learn a thing or two about cicadas, and that’s valuable knowledge.
15. 6G
Now is the time to pretend if you don’t really know what terms like 4G, 5G and 6G actually mean. It refers to different generations of technological standards for cellular networks. In other words, it is the level at which your mobile phone, the internet and many other telecommunications architectures work. That’s why many people were delighted with 5G. Call fast! Stream everything! Zoom less painful encounters! Well, things will get even faster and even better when more 5G networks appear around the world. And Japan and Korea are already working on 6G capabilities. This next generation will help improve things like teleworking and distance learning, as well as more futuristic activities such as holograms and virtual and augmented reality.
16. Artificial intelligence. Everywhere.
AI technology has been a huge focal point for some time, but in 2021 we will see it appear in more places. And no, not in a scary “Black Mirror” way. Imagine, for example, everything AI can do to help us interpret and use medical and scientific data if. You know, just in case a massive pandemic hit. AI helps even more companies make smarter decisions about customer behavior. Wilson Pang, head of technology at Appen, told Forbes that he hopes that in 2021 more companies will address worrying issues of bias in AI technologies so that innovators can develop AI in responsible ways.
17. Delivery of drones
Walmart, Amazon, UPS and other companies are stepping up their drone game, so don’t be surprised if packages start landing at your door soon. The Federal Aviation Administration has just launched new rules on “drones” that will advance “the integration of drones into the national airspace system.” Amazon’s Prime Air drone delivery service received the function from the FAA in early 2020.
18. The Queen of England turns 95 years old
Queen Elizabeth II is already the longest monarch in the history of Great Britain and, in 2021, she will celebrate an equally impressive achievement: her 95th birthday! Her birthday is April 21st. He probably doesn’t need presents, but hopefully our British friends will do something fantastic to celebrate. In the meantime, we’ll follow the “Crown.”
19. Highly anticipated concerts
Nostalgia will have quite a year in 2021 with all the reboots, remakes and reunions. Could we get another dose with a potential Spice Girls World Tour? There have been rumors about a 25-year-old tour, and Spice Girl Mel C herself has suggested it could happen. Meanwhile, the Doobie brothers will hit the road for their 50th anniversary tour in July. Celine Dion, Guns N ‘Roses, Harry Styles and dozens of other acts make plans to return to the stage as the year progresses.
20. New albums
Do you want your music a little more socially distant? Evanescence, Kendrick Lamar, Kacey Musgraves, Lorde, Cardi B, Adele, The Foo Fighters and The Cure are confirmed or rumored to be releasing new albums this year.
21. Hugs 🙁
Come on, 2021. Please leave us on this one.
