11,000 cans of ice cream are recalled because they may contain pieces of metal

A recall has been issued for more than 11,000 Weis Markets ice cream containers that may be contaminated with metal parts, according to the FDA.
“The products may be contaminated with foreign materials, especially parts of metal filling equipment,” the company said in a press release, adding that there is concern that the foreign material could be a choking hazard.

The withdrawal covers 10,869 units of Weis-quality cookies and 48-ounce ice cream and 502 3-gallon bulk containers of Klein’s Vanilla Dairy ice cream.

There is a report about a customer who found an “intact piece of metal equipment” in a 48-ounce box of cookies and cream, the company said.

The 48-ounce containers were sold in all 197 Weis Markets grocery stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and West Virginia. They have now been put up for sale, the company said.

The product has an expiration date of October 21, 2020, located at the bottom of the container. Customers who have purchased the product can return it for a full refund.

Klein’s Vanilla 3-gallon bulk ice cream was not intended for retail sale. It was sold to a New York retail store and was disposed of, the company said.

Additional ice cream products that were packed on the same day as the withdrawn items were stored in a warehouse and not distributed, according to the company.

Customers seeking additional information can contact Weis Customer Service, the company said.
