Zack Snyder reveals his plans for a film centered on Ryan Choi under the name Atom, after the character was introduced in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Zack Snyder revealed that he initially had plans for an Atom movie in China, with Ryan Zheng (also known as Zheng Kai) as Ryan Choi.
Talking to Grace Randolph on Beyond trailer, Snyder talked about how he hoped Justice League could be used as a trampoline for an Atom film in China. In the past, Snyder mentioned that he was interested in creating an Atom spin-off and went into detail with Randolph about how he wished he had seen that idea come to fruition. His plans included balancing the film in both English and Chinese to help create a larger scale for the project. In addition, Snyder hoped to convey to fans the importance of Chinese heroes, emphasizing that not only “this Chinese character is in the movie, but we are in HIS movie.”
This is not the first time Snyder has spoken of his interest in making narratives that transcend language barriers. His next movie Army of Thieves, a prequel this summer Army of the Dead, will be a film in English, French and German. For Snyder, this is an important technique that helps make these films feel more internationally represented.
Marvel recently awarded the trailer and poster for its first film with a Chinese leader, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The trailer was well received, many fans expressed their enthusiasm to see a Chinese hero in a major superhero production. As Randolph noted, Snyder had these plans for Atom in 2015. In this regard, Snyder pointed out that, so far, fans could have already seen the film Atom in China, if this film had been watched.
Into the Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Ryan Choi’s character was introduced as a scientist working in Star Labs with Cyborg’s father, Silas Stone. Although it was a small role, Zheng’s cast created the possibility of future appearances on the line. Snyder’s vision for the expanded DC Universe was full of teasing and possible threads to explore. This storytelling structure helped create Snyder Cut and recently led to a fan rally call to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse, which Snyder himself supports.
