Mexican folk singer Yuri, who defines herself as a “Christian”, received strong criticism on social networks after broadcasting a video dancing in disguise as the Virgin Mary, in what she considered “humor” for Christmas.
In the video posted on the TikTok social network, Yuri appears dressed in Santa María with a man dressed in San José. After a seemingly innocent dance, the Mexican singer moves with steps similar to those of reggaeton and then simulates a pregnancy discomfort.

“Every religion deserves respect,” wrote one social network user, while another asked about Yuri, “Christian or hypocrite?”
Another TikTok user said that “I was one of the people who admired and respected her as a person and artist, but with that she lost everything to me.”

Interviewed by ACI Prensa, Fr. Hugo Valdemar, penitentiary canon of the Archdiocese of Mexico, said that indignation among Catholic believers is understandable, because “the figure of the mother is loved by every human being. For example, in Mexico the biggest crime is the one committed with reference to the mother ”.
“Well, the same thing is happening to Catholics, an offense of the Blessed Virgin, in addition to being a serious sin of blasphemy, offends our Christian feeling in the deepest part,” he said.
The Mexican priest, who for 15 years was director of communications for the Archdiocese of Mexico under the pastoral government of Cardinal Norberto Rivera, explained that “the Catholic Church, since the beginning of Christianity, has had great love and veneration for the Blessed Virgin Mary.”
“She is the mother of Jesus, preserved from all stain and sin, the most perfect being, who is also the mother of the Church because that is what Jesus wanted on the cross,” he said.
