YouTube is the big winner of social media during the pandemic

YouTube saw the most significant increase in any social app among American users during the pandemic, the Pew Research Center reported on Wednesday.

Google’s video service saw an increase in usage from 73% of US adults in 2019 to 81% in 2021. This was followed most closely by Reddit, which saw use increase from 11% of adults in the US. US in 2019 to 18% in 2021.

The findings come from a survey of 1,502 adults in the United States conducted between January 25 and February. 8, 2021. The overall margin of error was plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

YouTube’s popularity is particularly high among young people between the ages of 18 and 29, with 95% saying they use the service. Of this age group, 71% said they use Instagram, 70% said they use Facebook and 65% said they use Snapchat. The study looked at 220 people in that age group, and the margin of error was plus or minus 7.3 points.

Facebook use remains high among Americans, with 69% of American adults saying they visit the social network. However, that figure has remained relatively stable over the past five years, according to Pew.

The Pew report included TikTok and Nextdoor for the first time. The report said that 21% of Americans use TikTok and 13% use Nextdoor.
