The video of the attack shows a red-topped person running to a man and woman on the street, then waving at the man as the woman screams while another person watches. In another clip, the male victim is cursed and appears to be pushed or beaten, although it is unclear in the video whether it is the same attacker or another person who is part of a group.
The attack took place on Nov. 19, 2020, Tacoma Police Public Information Officer Wendy Haddow told CNN. A complaint was filed at the time, she said, but police didn’t connect it to the video until relatives of the victims recognized their relatives in the footage.
“The family saw it on the news,” Haddow said. She declined to comment on whether the person who recorded the video was one of the attackers, citing the ongoing investigation.
According to Tacoma police, the victims did not know the attackers.
“They had never seen them, never dealt with them before,” Haddow said. She told CNN that it is up to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office to decide whether the case will be prosecuted as a hate crime.
‘I want him to get better. I want him to know this was bad, ”the man said in Korean, according to a KIRO translation.
