If you, like me, have ever wanted an old Grand Prix car, but don’t have the money or motivation to maintain a classic car,en I have some good news for you. A new Kit type 184 can transform an old Mazda MX-5 Miata in an Alfa Romeo 158, a vehicle from the late 1930s that won the first official Formula 1 race at Silverstone in 1950.

If you have viewed Ant Anstead’s MotorTrend show Wheel sellers, then you might know what’s going on. This is Anstead’s latest project and I have to admit: I’m a fan.

The Anstead website lists very few details about this kit (you need to submit a deposit to find out more), but in an interview with F1 Geeks, Anstead has revealed that Tipo 184 will offer both a kit and a fully assembled car. This way, you can decide if you want to get down and get dirty to create your own Alpha – or if you just want the experience of driving one.

And … there’s a warning. The kit includes everythingyou have to do Alpha, minus Miata. You have to bring this to do it yourself – but it will still be much cheaper than buying an old Alpha directly. And since it’s a kit car, it’s not a perfect replica.

The kit in all its glory.

The kit is advertisinged as 7,499 GBP, or $ 10,192 here in the United States. There are a limited number of 10 packages of these starter packages, so if you want one, you will want to throw your name into operation, either with a 75 or 50% advance. If you are one of the first buyers, you will also have the chance to build the car in the Tipo 184 workshop –with Anstead’s helping hand.

If this does not happen to you, then do not worry: the instructions are well organized in several distinct “chapters” that will guide you through one element of the car at a time. You will also be able to purchase these kits separately in 2021, so you can build your budget at your own pace.
