WWE released a wrong guy on Thursday, releasing 10 fighters. This list included Samoa Joe, who was recently part of WrestleMania 37 the broadcast team, as well as rising stars from Peyton Royce and Billie Kay, formerly known as The Ilconics.
The launch of Samoa Joe is particularly amazing. On Monday, he was listed internally as an active WWE talent, but this has obviously changed drastically in a few days. Chelsea Green, who seemed to have a bright future in the WWE, was also a surprising launch. Among the others who were cut were Mickie James, Kalisto, Tucker, Bo Dallas and Wesley Blake.
As discouraging as it is for talent to be released, this is a group that has been severely underused. Everyone now has the chance to rewrite their script. Royce, Kay, James and Green would all make big contributions to AEW, Impact Wrestling or NWA, as well as generate buzz on the independent circuit, which is still fighting against the background of the pandemic. And as much as a global platform offered by WWE, these performers now have the opportunity to evolve in a distinct way, away from the restrictions and limitations of a company, so aimed at its shareholders.
And, although WWE is a commercial success WrestleMania, and continues to produce massive profits, these discounts are another cool reminder that the bottom line is running Vince McMahon’s company.
