After several delays in the release date and a lot of hype among the fans, The Wonderful Woman 1984 has officially arrived. The DC Comics-inspired film debuted on Christmas Day, with viewers able to check it out in both theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service. For those who immediately checked out the film, there is no doubt a lot to consider, as the almost three-hour blockbuster includes a lot of nods to the history of the Amazon Princess. Earlier in the film, Diana Prince / Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) explains the story of her Golden Eagle armor, which she hid based on operations in her Washington, DC apartment. As Diana explains to a new resurrected Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), the armor was worn by the greatest champion of the Amazons – Asteria, a legendary warrior who fell behind in the human world while Zeus created Themyscira.
Go quickly to the scene in the middle of the credits, which shows a brunette woman walking through a city square while wearing a blue outfit. After a nearby pole breaks and nearly crushes nearby civilians, the woman instantly holds him and saves the day – and turns to reveal her face. It’s Asteria, played by none other than the legendary Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter. Asteria introduces herself to one of the civilians and suggests her story, before noting that she has been doing this for a long time.
The moment is undoubtedly epic – precisely because it pays homage to Carter’s original film as Wonder Woman, in the eponymous TV show that originally aired between 1975 and 1979 (which happened to be added to HBO Max at the beginning this week). He also canonizes Carter in the modern DC Films universe, which fans have long been excited about.
“I talked to [director] Patty Jenkins. He talked to me on the phone about the character and I tried to see if I could do anything with it [first Wonder Woman] film, but it didn’t work, “Carter said in an interview variety in 2016. “Time was running out and I was doing other things and I couldn’t get to where they were shooting.”
And with a spin-off Amazon in the works, and The wonderful woman 3 remaining a possibility, it is not known exactly where we could still see Asteria.
