And it seems that the decision of Warner Bros. to launch Wonder Woman 1984 on the streaming service of the WarnerMedia HBO Max subscription, at the same time as in cinemas it bore fruit.

On Wednesday, parent company AT&T revealed that as a result, 17.7 million active users were added to HBO Max by the end of December.

This number was double the number it had at the end of September.

AT&T CEO John Stankey shared the news of the success during a fourth-quarter earnings call.

“The launch of Wonder Woman 1984 helped increase our HBO Max and HBO subscribers to over 41 million, two years faster than our initial forecast,” Stankey said, as reported by THR.com.

Just two days after the film’s release, Warner Bros. announced that he will be fast – watching a third film in the franchise, with Gadot reprized his role as Diana Prince and Patty Jenkins returning as a writer and director.

The success of Wonder Woman 1984 in both cinemas and streaming will boost confidence in the company’s controversial decision to continue with a hybrid release of its entire 2021 list of films.

The combined premiere of movies in theaters and streaming seems to increase activation further.

“Activations” counts the number of people who download (activate) HBO Max.

THR.com reports that the company hopes to reach 50 to 55 million HBO Max customers in the US by 2025.

WarnerMedia also plans to release an ad version of HBO Max in the second quarter of the year and begin launching the streaming service internationally.
