FOOTHILL FARMS (CBS13) – A woman from Foothill farms is dead and her adult son is arrested for killing her in her elderly apartment on Tuesday night.
The confrontation led to a massive response from Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies, who exchanged gunfire with the suspect before he surrendered.
The sheriff’s office says deputies were called home to block 5400 of Auburn Boulevard for an internal dispute between family members. When deputies arrived at the scene, they said they fired shots from inside an apartment unit. Deputies returned fire and withdrew, provoking a confrontational situation.
Linda Elmore says she was in the hallways when deputies told her to return to her unit for her own safety.
“Massive,” Elmore said. “I’ve never seen so many police cars at once.”
Around 6 p.m., the sheriff’s office warned the public to stay away from the area, while negotiators responded on the spot. One tweet, the sheriff’s office said there was “a large police presence in block 5400 of Auburn Boulevard for an armed, barricaded subject.”
The mother and another family member both called the sheriff’s office for help.
Leslie Marinello lives in the senior apartment complex and heard gunshots inside her house.
“Oh, man, yes, when they left, it was like a hundred at one point, I’ve never heard anything like that,” Marinello said.
Deputies eventually called a hostage negotiator and the suspect turned himself in. The violent confrontation took place just one day after a sheriff’s deputy was killed during the exercise.
“At the end of the day, MPs put aside what has happened in recent days and go out and do what these professional men and women are doing,” said Sacramento Sergeant Rod Grassman.
The suspect in the shooting was taken to a hospital with what is described as a superficial gunshot wound. The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department did not immediately identify him.
