Woman found dead in church parking lot amidst a series of murders in the Houston area

HOUSTON – Houston has had a fatal shooting in the last 24 hours.

There have been six shootings since Friday night at 10:30 p.m., in which a total of nine people have been shot, according to data collected by KPRC 2.

Five of those people died.

That brings the total number of murders in Houston to at least 89, according to KPRC 2 data.

Houston police recently said a woman was found dead in a church parking lot on Almeda Genoa in southeastern Houston. The police are still trying to find out what happened and why she was shot.

“A passerby saw the car parked there and then came back and found himself standing still and looked and found her dead in the car,” said Detective Andrew Barr with the Houston Police Department.

On Friday after 10:30 p.m., two men received multiple gunshots near downtown Houston. One man died and another man was taken to hospital.

Investigators said witnesses said a group of people walked down the street on scooters. Two brothers left the main group and walked through a McDonald’s parking lot. At that moment they passed another group standing by a vehicle. They exchanged words that escalated into disturbances with guns, police said.

Police said shooting was taking place.

Officials said it is not clear whether the shots from both groups were fired at just one. There is also no suspicious information available at that time. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

That was followed by five other shootings.

“We were working on the homicide unit last night. It’s just been a busy year for us, so a bit busier than usual, ”said Barr.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner also weighed in on the violence in Houston.

“There’s way too much gang violence going on in our town and we’re going to get going again,” he said. “We have already started, but we will continue to mobilize resources to get more law enforcement on our streets. But at the same time, that won’t reduce violence in our city, we also need the community to be hands-on. “
