Why the Rams are making a heavy sale as a Lions trading partner for Stafford

One of the teams with some reported interest In relation to the Detroit Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford is the Los Angeles Rams. The points between the two are quite easy to connect.

GM New Lions Brad Holmes and assistant general Ray Agnew worked for the Rams three weeks ago. Los Angeles needs a better defender than Jared Goff to get a better shot at winning the NFC, or at least Rams head coach Sean McVay and GM Les Snead seem to support that belief on the outside.

Discovering a transaction between the two teams throws a lot of breaks in the lines that connect those points. The most important is the current situation of quarterback Rams and the situation of the salary cap with Goff.

Goff’s contract is a monster of an irresponsible blow. He has money guaranteed for the next two years, which makes Stafford’s business – once the biggest in the league – look like a big change. Goff costs over $ 40 million in fully guaranteed salaries and bonuses in both 2021 and 2022.

Rams doesn’t have much to offer other than Goff. Los Angeles does not have a selection in the first round in 2021. The Jaguars own it as a result of the Jalen Ramsey transaction, a swing-for-the-fences move that has largely borne fruit for the Rams. As a playoff team, the Rams pick later in each round. Their first selection in the 2021 NFL draft only comes in 57th overall.

They may have additional options in the third round to settle once the compensation options appear, but this is not the kind of return the Lions for Stafford can get from other contenders. If other teams offer a choice in the first round, as is largely expected, it is difficult to see that the new regime is shortened just to face a familiar team.

The acquisition of Goff, who led the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance two years ago, would at least temporarily solve the Lions QB problem created by Stafford trading. But Brad Holmes and his company can certainly do better than treat Stafford Rams.
