Why 2021 is shaping up to be a key year for electric vehicles

Get ready for a future without emissions.

No more internal combustion engines. No more trucks and polluting cars. Only 100% electric vehicles will be displayed and sold in dealerships.

Car manufacturers are shaking up and electrifying their range, teasing drivers with images of future gas-free vehicles. The US auto industry will look much different by 2025 than it looks today.

The online car shopping site Edmunds predicts that 2021 will be a “pivotal year” for electric vehicles, with US sales rising to 2.5% from 1.9% last year. Consumers will also see a flood of new models entering the market in the next 11 months: 30 electric vehicles from 21 brands, compared to 17 models in 2020, according to Edmunds.

Stephanie Brinley, an industry expert at IHS Markit, said a wider selection of affordable electric vehicles will help change Americans’ attitudes toward zero-emission vehicles. However, carmakers will have to work hard to highlight why EVs are the smarter choice, she added.

“Cost is another factor, and distance anxiety will be partially addressed by education,” Brinley told ABC News. “There is no reason why a consumer cannot adapt to an electric vehicle.”

Which car manufacturers are loading their portfolios and betting on battery technology?

Jaguar Land Rover

The British company owned by India Tata Motors has become the latest manufacturer to engage in an electric future.

Jaguar, the sports car manufacturer known for its seductive designs, will become a “fully electric luxury brand” by 2025 to “realize its unique potential,” the brand announced on February 15th. Future Jaguar models will be built “exclusively on pure electric architecture,” the company noted.

Jaguar currently produces an EV: I-PACE. Global sales of the stylish, futuristic-looking SUV totaled 7,807 units in 2020.

The first all-electric Land Rover will come in 2024 followed by five “pure electric variants” over the next five years, the company said. Moreover, JLR expects that almost 60% of Land Rovers sold by 2030 will be equipped with zero-powered trains.

The company has set another ambitious goal: zero net carbon emissions in the supply chain, products and operations by 2039.

Ford Motor

The launch of Ford-powered vehicles in the US has been slow compared to the competition. However, in Europe, the full range of Ford vehicles will run exclusively on batteries until 2030.

This week, Ford pledged to spend $ 1 billion to overhaul its factory in Cologne, Germany, as a base for electric vehicle production. Bentley Motors

General engines

The car giant has not yet eliminated internal combustion engines – yet.

The Detroit-based automaker unveiled plans for electric vehicles in January, swearing that 40 percent of American models will be battery-powered electric vehicles by the end of 2025.

“Consumers’ desire to consider electric vehicles will change as products improve,” she added.
