White Christmas that causes headaches in Pittsburgh, with many roads still covered in snow – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It may have been a white Christmas this year, but it is now causing headaches in many neighborhoods in Pittsburgh.

Many residents reported that their streets remain unconnected and untreated, making driving and driving conditions dangerous.

Carrick is one such neighborhood, with Spokane Avenue right in front of the still-covered Carrick High School.

Some Carrick residents decided not to wait for the city and took the snow in their hands, shoveling the streets after waiting for the city’s plows and salt trucks.

“This is the whole neighborhood that comes out and needs to do that,” said Carrick resident Peter Freeman.

“It’s horrible,” Biff Austin added. “He is never plowed and salted unless he calls and complains about it. I think he forgets he’s here. “

Austin has lived in Carrick for 12 years and feels as if he has been overlooked by a winter storm.

“Nothing was cleaned up this morning when I took my daughter to work,” he said. “18th Street was covered, Brownsville Road.”

However, Carrick is not the only neighborhood in Pittsburgh that deals with these conditions.

There are also several unpaved or slick roads in Overbrook.

KDKA received several calls and emails from viewers complaining about poor conditions in neighborhoods such as the South Side, Lincoln Place and Hays.

Pittsburgh City Councilman Anthony Coghill, the representative for District 4, posted on Facebook this morning that his office has received more than 50 complaints about unpaved streets. He says the holiday is partly to blame for the slow start.

District 4 includes Brookline, Beechview, Bon Air, Carrick, Mr. Washington and Overbrook.

A representative of Mayor Bill Peduto’s office said crews continue to work to clean the streets, and Public Works Department staff from other divisions are also coming to the rescue.

“It’s going to be a dangerous situation,” Freeman said. “I don’t know if I can stand on this street right now. There was no one with salt. We pay taxes and this happens every year. “

Carrick and Overbrook are not alone.

Brooklyn’s Berkshire Boulevard was still fairly well covered in snow and ice when our teams were out on Saturday night.

The city also said some neighborhoods are facing delays in garbage collection and recycling, saying some neighborhoods that should have picked up garbage today may not have it until Monday or Tuesday.

Not only did the covered roads cause headaches to the residents, but they also became a danger to drivers.

About 800 Duquesne Light customers ran out of electricity after a car accident pulled out a utility pole and its wires on West Liberty Avenue.

According to Duquesne Light, the crews initially got to the scene due to the icy roads, but now they say that the vast majority of customers should have had their power restored.
