Whistler P1 Outbreak turns British Columbia into the largest COVID-19 Variant hotspot outside Brazil

The Canadian ski village of Whistler was closed after 877 confirmed cases of COVID-19 variant P1 turned British Columbia into the largest hot spot variant outside of Brazil, where P1 was first identified. Canada, which is battling a third deadly wave of the pandemic, has imposed stricter restrictions as it struggles to launch a national vaccination campaign. It is not clear how the variant got to the ski resort, where the first 84 people who gave positive results did not report any trip outside Canada. Since it was first identified in British Columbia, the P1 outbreak has spread to neighboring provinces and is suspected of infecting 21 players of the Vancouver Canucks pro hockey team.
