When is the Pink Moon? What time will the super full moon of April 2021 and its significance take place

A full “pink” moon will fall in love with the sky later this month – and it’s especially worth going out to look at.

Full moons occur about once a month when the Earth is located directly between the sun and the moon.

This month, the month will be full at 23:33 ET ET Monday, April 26th. At this point, the side of the moon facing us will be completely illuminated, looking like a perfect circle.

In North America, the full moon in April is often referred to as the “pink moon,” but unfortunately it has nothing to do with the color of the Earth’s satellite.

The name probably derives from the pink flowers of the creeping flox or the flox moss – a plant native to eastern North America – which often blooms at this time of year, according to Almanac of the Old Farmer.

The names given to the full months come from a number of places and historical periods, including Native American, American colonial and European sources.

Other traditional names for the full moon in April include the breaking ice month, the month when the courses are navigable again, the flowering month of plants and shrubs, the month when the red grass appears, the month when the ducks return, the month when the geese lay eggs, and frog moon.

This month’s full moon is notable because it is also set to be a “supermoon.” This refers to any full moon that occurs when our satellite is 10 percent of the perigee or the minimum distance from Earth.

On average, supermen look about 7% older and 15% brighter than typical full moons. But most observers will find it difficult to tell the difference, because full moons are only seen once a month and cannot be compared directly to each other.

For the best view of the pink month of April, head to an open area and watch the supermoon as it rises just above the horizon. At this point, the moon will appear at the highest level thanks to a phenomenon known as the “illusion of the moon”.

Another supermoon will be visible next month. The full moon of May, which falls this year on May 26, is known as the flower moon.

If you fail to visit the pink moon, the Virtual Telescope Project, based in Italy, will provide a live stream of the event with views of our satellite rising above the city of Rome. The live stream starts at 17:15 UTC (13:15 ET) on April 26.
