What to do if you can’t make Android Auto calls

Earlier this year, a bug broke Google Assistant phone calls in Android Auto after users upgraded to Android 11. Google fixed the issue shortly after a system update, but the error still occurs for some users even after installing the patch. Fortunately, there seems to be a solution in the end. According to a post on Google support forums, the issue is caused by unconfigured application permissions, at least for some users.

Fixing the persistent error of the Android Auto phone call is easy, but first you need to confirm that you are up to date with the latest version of Android and Android Auto, just in case. On the phone, access Settings> System> Advanced> System Update. touch “Check for update” then run the installation if a patch is available. Then check if there is one a new version of Android Auto is available.

Similarly, if you’re using Android Auto via a touch screen in your car, be sure to update your vehicle’s firmware as well. Updating your car’s firmware depends on its make and model, but the steps should be readily available on the manufacturer’s support page.

If everything is up to date, but Google Assistant calls still don’t work in Android Auto, try this:

  1. While using Android Auto, ask Google Assistant to initiate a phone call or tap the “Phone” icon. Do not do this while driving, of course.
  2. A pop-up window will appear on your Android device (or on your car’s touch screen) asking you for the app you want to use for the phone call. Select the phone app, then tap “Always” when prompted. Make sure you touch “Always,” and no “Just once” otherwise you will have to repeat the steps.

Looks like this small change is all you need to do to make Google Assistant phone calls work again in Android Auto, but it may not work for everyone. Tell us if changing these settings worked for you or if you know of any other fixes.
