Now that the Steam servers have recovered from the looting horde of bargain hunters who arrived when the Steam winter sale began last night, we can look at what is worth buying. Normally, at RPS we make a lot of recommendations from the whole band, but everyone else has already given up for the year, so it’s just me and my opinions in fact. Probably the best RPS recommendations ever, I would imagine.
For the convenience of the budget, we ordered recommendations based on price.
Post Void – 1.56 GBP / 1.67 € / 2.00 USD (33% discount)
While Sin was good in Post Void, I never tried to try the FPS he called “a masterpiece of compulsive movement and hypnotic and irresistible sounds.” It was not expensive in the first place, but now it is less. So I just bought it.
Night shop – 1.59 GBP / 1.59 € / 1.99 USD (60% discount)
On a rainy night, go to a corner store in Quebecois to find the perfect gift for someone waiting at home. Wonderful first-person exploration game, with many things to get involved in and talk to the merchant. Lots of secrets to discover. I kept intending to post about this, but I never did and I’m sorry about that.
Devil’s Daggers – £ 1.99 / $ 1.99 / $ 2.49 (50% off)
This FPS Assassin’s Creed Assault is still one of the best and best game sounds.
Large Ocean Jacket – GBP 2.31 / 2.63 EUR / 3.19 USD (60% off)
A niece, her aunt and her uncle and her special friend go on a camping trip in its charming story from the producers of Little Party. It’s a slice of life, a weekend where nothing huge can happen, but people grow up. Mort is also a wonderful funny force of evil.
Tales From Off-Peak City Vol. 1 – 3.59 GBP / 4.09 EUR / 4.99 USD (50% off)
What’s this, another weird first-person exploration game recommendation from Alice? Yes. But also! Our nate, who is usually wary of anything that doesn’t involve orcs or spearmen, was delighted with Off-Peak City. It has earned a place on our Advent calendar this year.
American Truck Simulator – 3.74 GBP / 4.99 € / 4.99 USD (75% off)
When in doubt, keep busy. Older extensions that add additional states are also on sale, with older ones with a 70% discount.
Yakuza 0 – 3.74 GBP / 4.99 € / 49.99 USD (75% discount)
It’s hard to believe that 4 GBP could contain so much joy. Sega’s RPG combat prequel introduces two of the best boys in the game, two golden-hearted punchds that will help sad children in one minute, then wipe out robbers, spinning a bike in the next. Yakuza 0 goes hard on all its facets, taking secondary searches seriously as a criminal drama. God, what a game.
Doom – £ 4.49 / $ 5.99 / $ 5.99 (70% off)
Honestly, I had given up the remnants of Id software that made a good FPS again. Oh my!
Knight naked – 5,49 GBP / 7,49 EUR / 7,49 USD (50% discount)
I didn’t play it alone, but everyone I know ends up loving it, so maybe it’s okay. I assume this is a recommendation on behalf of Imogen.
Infra – £ 5.94 / $ 6.99 / $ 7.49 (75% off)
A first-person explorer-a-puzzler set in a European city on the verge of disaster. So we’re probably some kind of super cop saving the day with the killers, right? No, buddy, we’re an infrastructure analyst sent to inspect bridges and dams along a river, take pictures of code violations, and solve car puzzles. Sometimes it seems like Deus Ex is a first-person puzzle game? And sometimes it feels like … I’m not even sure. He was really surprised and delighted by this, a few rough and too long sections aside. I don’t know of any other game that will open with us, offering a Powerpoint presentation. And for Source Engine fans, oh boy, it’s the Source-lookin ‘Source game that Source ever made.
Stardew Valley – £ 7.36 / $ 9.37 / $ 9.99 (33% off)
Christmas at a distance? Do it in Stardew multiplayer. I just received an important update adding a farm on the beach.
In other waters – 7.63 GBP / 8.36 EUR / 10.04 USD (33% discount)
Exploring a large alien is on the street, and Alice Bee’s review puts it in my basket.
Deus Ex Collection – 7.79 GBP / 10.60 EUR / 10.60 USD (88% discount)
This is all Deus Ex, all games and all extensions, at 8 GBP. And they are individually reduced, but damn, 8 GBP.
Slay The Spire – $ 9.74 / $ 10.49 / $ 12.49 (50% off)
Nowadays we have a lot of roguelikeliks for building bridges, but this is my favorite. Funny and interesting world for fantasy (ohhh!) And the cards offer a solid feeling of playing as a person. It seems to me that the decisions to run on a very pleasant process. It’s good.
Cloudpunk – GBP 11.38 / EUR 13.39 / USD 13.39 (33% discount)
The premise of delivering packages to a cyberfuture city in a flying car has put this on my wish list, and the recent addition of a first-person mode has reached my basket.
Paradise Killer – £ 11.61 / $ 12.59 / $ 14.99 (25% off)
Venture into a failed paradise to solve a crime and learn about the strange and terrible cruelty on which everything is based. It’s not a huge discount, but hell, the game hasn’t come out in four months. While I die a little every time we say “Fuck dwarfs?”, I’m a sucker for a game that allows me to shed my own blood on an altar.
Outer Wilds – £ 11.69 / $ 12.59 / $ 14.99 (40% off)
Another mystery to solve! Only it is in a whole solar system that works in a time of 22 minutes. The choice of its many SF mysteries is wonderful and I like all the things that run on gravity and thrust simulations, which can sometimes feel punishing. It’s like being in several episodes of Star Trek TNG, only everyone is nice.
Heaven’s Vault – £ 11.99 / $ 13.19 / $ 14.99 (40% off)
Yet another mystery! It is solved by words, discovering the secrets of ancient civilizations by learning the language as you travel through the stars. Gorgeous.
Monster train – GBP 13.64 / € 14.69 / USD 17.49 (30% discount)
This would be my second favorite recently, built on the deck. Imogen and James liked Monster Train quite a bit to give it a place in the RPS coming calendar.
Hades – £ 15.59 / $ 16.79 / $ 19.99 (20% off)
It’s not a huge discount, but how else will you understand all the excited memes posted by your friends? The hack ‘n’ roguelikelike slogan game from Bastion and Pyre devs Supergiant is quite weird.
Halo: Master Chief Collection – £ 17.99 / $ 23.99 / $ 23.99
Who is this Master Chef whose kitchen has delighted Xboxeers for so many years? You can find out in this great package of PC releases, minus Halo 5 because Microsoft is trying its best to claim that it never happened. I just sang Halo: Reach, so I never learned the secrets of his butter biscuit bass and I might catch up now. The games are on the Game Pass, think about it, so you could check them out in a month or two for less.
Crusader Kings 3 – 33.59 GBP / 39.99 € / 39.99 USD (20% discount)
The discount isn’t huge, but it’s Crusader Kings, baby! This is also on the Game Pass, but it is a game you could play for years. Given Paradox’s penchant for reviewing and expanding games in updates, it could become quite different (and better!) Over the eons.
Half time: Alyx – GBP 34.86 / € 37.49 / USD 44.99 (25% discount)
If you can afford a VR headset, do you really need discounts on VR games? Yes, because you save to buy cyber shoes.
I’m sure you have recommendations too, dear reader – what games and discounts do you want to highlight?
