What the Giants could do to the linebacker

As part of the 2021 preview of the NFL project in The Post, we look at what the Giants could do in each position. Wednesday: Linebacker.

The Giants haven’t taken a defender in the first round of an NFL Draft since hitting gold with Carl Banks in 1984. That series isn’t expected to break this year, unless the Giants are in love with Penn State’s Micah Parsons. and considers him worthy. from the general election no. 11. Parsons is a weird athlete, but there is a positional value to consider when taking a backbacker so high – is he a three-player down? Parsons also has incidents in his past that need to be assessed.

For the sake of clarity, we will not consider the types of line lines outside its category.

At the bottom line, the Giants have a proven cargo in Blake Martinez, who had a sensational debut season after arriving in the free agency. He is a wise player and makes defensive calls, synchronized with coordinator Patrick Graham. After Martinez, it’s a mix-and-match.

Reggie Ragland has been signed and the four-year veteran could appear as a starter as a run-stop. Tae Crowder showed promise as a rookie. Devante Downs was re-signed for depth and TJ Brunson, who played in just five games as a rookie, also returned. Taking an inside backbacker in subsequent rounds is always an option. As for Parsons, his athletic and physical abilities are special, and his pairing with Martinez would be something to see. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah in round 2 would be interesting, because Graham would know what to do with this “interpolator” if he slips down in the second round.
