It started around 9:30 p.m., according to downdetector.com, a site and application monitoring service.
By 1 a.m. Saturday, it looks like the issue has been resolved.
“We are looking for reports that some people need to log in again to access their Facebook accounts,” the company said in a statement. “We believe this was due to a change in configuration and we are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible.”
The mass disconnection was quickly followed by memes from users, as well as some conspiracy theories.
In a stroke of irony (or genius, depending on your perspective), Facebook posted a follow-up note about the outage on Twitter.
So Facebook heard that it was a “configuration change.”
👏👏👏 engineers who solved the problem and patiently tried to explain the cause to us without result. https://t.co/AUARhCZ7W2
