The most recent two episodes of The hawk and the winter Soldier They were full of life for John Walker, the government-appointed replacement for Steve Rogers for Captain America’s mantle. In “The Whole World Is Watching,” Walker administered superhero serum and then killed one of the Flag-Smashers in public in an angry revenge auction after Battlestar’s death. The last episode, “The Truth,” saw Walker stripped of Captain America’s military title and rank. But he is still convinced that he is the captain of America and Karli Morganthau must pay for the death of Lemar Hoskin. In the post-credits scene, he builds a new Captain America shield to replace the one taken from him.
The arc follows the story of Walker from comics quite closely, although with some modifications and suggestions to a similar fate. How does everything happen in the Marvel Comics Universe? First of all, it is not Battlestar’s death that determines Walker in comics. Here’s how Walker’s time as Captain America ended and what followed, though that could ruin some of what will come in. In comics, Walker took his serum directly from Power Broker and did not start acting like a superhero until then. Lemar Hoskins and two of Walker’s colleagues also received the serum. After a brief career as a Super-Patriot, Walker received the call to become Captain America. Lemar became Battlestar, but the other two super-soldiers could not pass a background check. Defeated, they crashed the press conference about what the new Captain America would have been made public and revealed the identity of John Walker, who was kept secret.
Exposing his identity was terrible news for Walker, especially since his first mission as Captain America was to infiltrate his hometown and root out a terrorist group called the Watchdogs. After learning that Walker is Cap, the Watchdogs took their parents hostage to lure him. Walker refused orders to save his parents, but as soon as he made his move, the Watchdogs opened fire and killed his mother and father. Walker burst out, killing the entire group of watch dogs, then following his old friends who broke up his press conference and set him on fire.
The government could hope to cover up Walker’s violent behavior. It would have taken him away from his role if it weren’t for Flag-Smasher (the only Karl Morganthau in comics) who would request a meeting with Captain America. The government sent Walker, but Flag-Smasher acknowledged that Steve Rogers did not know he was speaking and defeated Walker in battle. To save his friend, Battlestar went against Walker’s wishes and found Steve Rogers and brought him to his rescue.
After that, Walker had a fall with Hoskins. He learned that the Red Skull was behind him, always becoming Captain America, and eventually encouraged Steve Rogers to claim the title of Captain America. However, the government still had plans for John Walker. He could not be a public symbol like Captain America, but he could serve them in other positions.
Walker obtained a new suit and shield (both thrown by Steve Rogers after returning to the American captain) and a new code name, American agent. He was then sent to become a member of the West Coast Avengers, working as a government liaison, which provoked conflicts between him and his teammates, but eventually earned him respect. However, the philosophical differences between him and the other Marvel heroes often contradict him with the most popular Avengers. Walker spent time trying to redeem himself and get out of the shadow of Captain America, and finally fixed things with Battlestar. He would later work with teams such as The Dark Avengers, Thunderbolts and Omega Flight.
