Washtenaw County Prosecutor announces office will no longer prosecute consensual sex work charges

WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office will no longer prosecute those who work consensually in the sex industry.

“We are focusing on crime that is really hurting the community,” said Washtenaw County Attorney Eli Savit.

No charges will be filed against consensual sex workers, officials said.

“We say we don’t tax the simple sex trade for money,” Savit said.

The prosecutor will continue to work cases against human traffickers and those who could hold people against their will.

Sandra Ramocan works closely with sex workers at the Alternative for Girls organization and believes it is a step in the right direction – as long as sex is completely consensual.

“As an agency, we say we think it’s a good thing, you know, because as we work with these survivors of sex work, they come to us to get some services. These criminal cases follow them “, said Ramocan.

“I have no tolerance for human traffickers. They will be a priority in our prosecutor’s office. We will go after them. This policy is aimed at ensuring that we do not see an increase in human trafficking and that we are aware when it happens, “said Savit.
