“He showed me what it means to be an actor, with his concentration and commitment,” he said. “It was true that he was more serious on the set, certainly than Julie, who was charming and fun, full of light and joy for all of us.
But Christopher came there to do some work, and he knew that as children we should not be as comfortable with him as our father was than Mary. So it was actually a very calculated move.
“She was extremely friendly and warm and taught us jokes and songs, and Christopher kept his distance from us and I think it was absolutely a good call and I had a huge admiration for him.”
But Christopher had a gentler side, with Debbie from Minnesota, who remembered a famous scene from the movie in which he secretly made faces at her to make her laugh.

She said, “I was doing the scene after we came back from picking berries and he was in front of me and he said to me,‘ Marta, where have you really been? ”.
“The camera was on his back and I just remember him facing me, making me laugh … It was just kind of funny to remember that he had a soft side to him.”
Julie, now 85, was 27 while filming, before the 1964 film Mary Poppins was released in the United States, and Angela remembered how the star would teach young actors words to songs. from the musical icon on the set.
“Mary Poppins hadn’t come out yet, so no one in America knew who she was,” Nicolas said. “Most people in LA didn’t know who he was.

“He was 27 years old, and the studio was facing bankruptcy and all this was on the shoulders of a 27-year-old girl and if you think about what he did in that movie, it’s an amazing achievement.”
Angela added: “Oh, she taught us the songs from Mary Poppins, absolutely! I can still say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious back. She was wonderful to be around and had a lot of energy and we had so much fun at the movie. ‘
Christopher had been quoted as saying that he regretted his choice to star in the film, but Angela says that his view of the film “changed” as he got older and that his serious attitude brought an “advantage” to the role.
“I think that changed as he got older and he realized how he made his career more advanced, much faster than he could have had,” she said.
“I think she kind of regretted saying that, but I think it brought a real advantage to the part that made her not so sick and I enjoyed working with Chris, a very talented, very sad guy. I lose him ”.
