LA Dodgers legend Vin Scully’s wife dies at age 76 after battling Lou Gehrig’s disease

Sandra Scully, the husband of iconic Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, has died at the age of 76 after battling Lou Gehrig’s illness.

Sandra died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles after years of fighting ALS.

“The family appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers; however, they are requesting confidentiality at this time, ”said a family representative. Any donations must be made to the UCLA / ALS Department of Neuromuscular Diseases on behalf of Sandra.

Born in Cascade, Virginia, she is survived by 93-year-old Hall of Fame baseball commentator, whom she married 48 years after they married in November 1973.

The couple had a child together, Catherine, and were parents to five children from previous marriages, according to the AP. They have 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Vin told the AP last summer about the fight for his wife’s health: “It’s really inspiring, her faith is extremely important and I think that’s a major reason she argued.”

Dodgers President and CEO Stan Kasten said in a statement, “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Sandi Scully, Vin’s loving wife and a dear member of the Dodger family.

“Sandi was Vin’s biggest fan and was always there, lovingly supporting him at Dodger Stadium, until he started his fight with ALS. It was really the rock of Vin and the Scully family and he will really miss it.

A number of Los Angeles sports personalities posted memories of Sandra, who was in the broadcast stand with Vin during her last home game in September 2016.

“Condolences to Vin Scully,” said Fred Roggin, the sports screenwriter. “Sandi’s wife, 47, died of ALS.”

“It’s devastating,” said Alanna Rizzo. “My heart breaks for the whole Scully family. RIP, Sandi.

Athletic’s Molly Knight wrote on Twitter: “Sandi Scully has died after a long illness. He used to come to all of Dodger’s home games in the last few years of Vin’s career and sit in the stand with him. It’s so sad.

Los Angeles Angels broadcaster Mark Gubicza wrote on Twitter: “Sending thoughts and prayers to Vin and the entire Scully family. Sandi has always been so nice to anyone who knew her. Rest in peace, Sandi. Hands folded.

Scully retired after 67 years with the Dodgers in 2016.
