Despite a run that became more impressive each time she appeared in season 5 of The masked singer, Seashell was eliminated on Wednesday from Fox’s costume song competition. And when the giant shell came off, Sister, sister star Tamera Mowry turned out to be the crooning crustacean. (The two-hour episode also saw Crab leave – read our recap to see who he really was.)
On Wednesday, TVLine spoke with Mowry – whose resume also includes Home and family and The real – about how he couldn’t keep his Seashell secret from his twin sister Tia Mowry. Read on to hear what he had to say.
TVLINE | Since I think another act this season is an act of brotherhood, I wouldn’t skip this show to try to get both you and your sister there. Was that ever an option? Tell me about how you got involved.
I’ve always liked to sing. Anyone who loves me knows that I play in the shower, especially my brother. I grew up with a lot of “Shut up! You’re too loud! ” [Laughs] I sang all the time when I was cleaning, when I was in the shower, between college, I thought I was Celine Dion. So I started my career in a singing group called Voices. And at that moment, my sister and I called a pilot Sister, sister. So I had to decide which way to go. And I always liked to sing, only the acting was right in front of me.
Obviously, I think I made the right decision at the time. Sister, sister became an American classic, a hit. But at the same time, I always wondered, “When will I be able to sing again? And on stage? And do you perform? I sang “I’m going down” Sister, sister and so far, people absolutely adore him. But I really didn’t perform, to sing with music on stage and dance, oh my God, in over 20 years. It was always a dream to see him again, how he felt. When The masked singer appeared, my co-host The real, Adrienne [Bailon] she did it and looked at me after it was all over, she was exposed, she said, “Tamera, you must make this show … You have to do it. “It simply came to our notice then. There was an opportunity that came up a year ago and I couldn’t do it, so when he came back, I said yes without questions.
TVLINE | What did Tia think? Did she know?
Yes of course. I think the hardest part was trying to keep him quiet. The only people who knew initially were my mother, my husband and my cousin. My cousin was there with me. He is my journey or death, he is my best friend and he is also a worship leader at his church. So I didn’t have this huge entourage with COVID and I wanted someone there – it’s like my life coach, so I trained throughout the process. And my mom was on the phone at almost every show and after that, so I had my little support group. But I couldn’t tell anyone else. You don’t have to tell anyone! [Laughs] That was the hardest part. But actually, at the first performance, I found out that my sister texted my brother, Taj, and my brother sent me a message and said, “We know it’s you.” [Laughs] And I mean, you can’t deny that.
TVLINE | Nicole Scherzinger guessed your name in this week’s episode. What was going on under your mask when you heard her say that?
I was saying to myself, “Oh, my God! In the end! It took you so long! ” [Laughs] But I also said, “Damn, she knows.” It was not hidden. She was so confident. And I liked that she thought it was my best performance. I didn’t see her, but I actually had the most fun singing this song. It was a childhood song I loved. I only wanted to pay homage when I decided to be an animator and this was one of the first songs I danced to, with the babysitter’s daughter and my sister.
TVLINE | I know you’ve addressed this before, but I have to ask you, if there was an update: Any discussion about the review Sister, sister rebirth?
From now on, no … Sometimes you don’t mess with perfection. [Laughs]
