The Venezuelan opposition on Thursday celebrated the installation of offices in the Dominican Republic to help migrants from the oil country to regularize their status on the island, of which 89.7% are in an irregular migration situation.
“We celebrate the opening of an office for the regularization of the more than 100,000 Venezuelan migrants living in the Dominican Republic. It is a very important step for our fellow citizens who live there, because about 89% have an illegal immigration status,” said opponent Julio Borges on Twitter.
Borges, representative of the opposition leader Juan Guaidó abroad, sent his thanks to the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, and his Chancellor, Roberto Álvarez Gil, for a decision.
The former deputy also recalled that the opposition promotes the “Brothers” program, so that “more countries can adhere” to the “policy of reception and fraternity towards Venezuelans”.
Offices to help Venezuelan migrants regularize their situation in the Dominican Republic began operating on Monday, when a platform was also launched virtual to guide them.
These offices are the product of an alliance between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and seven Venezuelan refugee and migrant organizations.
In addition to the Santo Domingo offices, there are information windows in Punta Cana, Bávaro, Boca Chica, San Cristóbal and Santiago (with two locations).
According to the calculations of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM), approximately 114,050 Venezuelans currently live in the country and, of these, 89.7% have an irregular immigration status, a circumstance that determined the Government to take the decision to temporarily extend their stay. in the territory.
