UTMB Dr. Janak Patel, who lost his wife to COVID-19, is now determined to help vaccinate Houstonians

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Vaccinating thousands of people a day in one location is a huge undertaking.

Walter Hall Park in League City has become one of those sites in Galveston County.

On Friday, they were to vaccinate 3,000 people. It is part of a comprehensive effort by Galveston County, the county’s health district and the medical branch of the University of Texas.

One of the UTMB doctors, Dr. Janak Patel, helped to make it all happen.

“It’s a drive-thru program and we’ve had it for almost two months now,” Patel said.

However, for Dr. Patel, the vaccine has become personal.

“I have a passion for this vaccination program,” Patel said. “I know it saves lives.”

From the beginning of COVID-19, his wife, Nisha, gave them back to those on the front lines.

“In the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis, many health workers were working non-stop,” he said. “He cooked food and delivered it well to hospitals.”

Then his 38-year-old wife received COVID-19 and unfortunately failed.

“I watched everyone fight to get the best care possible and, like many others, he gave up,” Patel said. “It gave me an extra sense of my work in the fight against COVID-19.”

That is why Patel is motivated to continue to do what he does today.

He is determined to help others fight this virus, which he said he has taken from so many.

“Her life gave me extra meaning,” Patel said.
